Kidungan Jula-Juli is an oral poetic form in Javanese vernacular commonly spoken between friends and close relatives known as ngoko. This type of pantun is unique to Surabaya and used to express someone's feelings. It is performed with distinctive vocal twists and accompanied by the strains of Indonesian traditional percussion ensemble gamelan playing. The lyrics of Kidungan Jula-Julimay use the form of parikan (a two-line rhyming poem) or pantun (a four-line rhyming poem).
